Adam Elsheimer (b. 1578, Frankfurt/Main, d. 1610, Rome)
Landscape with Latona and the Lycian shepherds
Wallraf Richartz Museum, Cologne
Oil on copper 16.9*22.7 cm
The work was hung in the 2006 Adam Elsheimer exhibition, whose catalogue refers to Keith Andrews: 'Elsheimer's Latona uncovered' Burlington Magazine, 123, 1981 (on JSTOR). The painting was long considered lost, and was only rediscovered about 30 years ago, after the removal of disturbing overpainting underneath which the seriously damaged original was hidden.
It seems possible, therefore, that Wölfflin may have known of this work from the etching by Wenceslaus Hollar.
